What Does Toner Do for Your Skin?

Setting the tone

Cleanse, tone, moisturize.”

Rinse and repeat.

It’s the mantra that many of us have grown up having drilled into our heads, but how many of us have really taken the time to understand what we are doing for our skin? Steps one and three are pretty self-explanatory: cleansing cleans and moisturizing moisturizes. What about that pesky second step? A toner…tones?

What does that mean?

What is a facial toner?

A face toner is a skincare product that should be used after cleansing and before the rest of your skincare routine. It’s usually got a lightweight, water-like texture for easy application and absorption. When used correctly, a toner is simultaneously the last cleansing step of your skincare routine and the first step of your skin nourishing routine.

Toners, by and large, perform an array of pretty important functions in a skincare routine. They remove the last bits of excess sebum and dirt that your cleanser didn’t quite get, they can soothe and help protect skin, and they can improve the effectiveness of the rest of the skincare products in your routine.

Are all face toners basically the same?

Nope! While most toners are made to perform the same basic functions (as discussed above), modern toners are formulated to perform additional functions. It’s important to ensure you’re picking a toner that you know will work well with your skin.

For example, if you have acne prone skin, an astringent toner like the Bija Trouble Toner can help remove excess sebum while also exfoliating and tightening pores to refresh your skin. If you know you have dry skin, a highly moisturizing toner like the Olive Vitamin E Real Skin can help nourish your skin.

Pairing Toners

To take your skincare to the next level, you can also choose to increase the effectiveness of your toner by pairing it with complementary products already in your routine. The Black Tea Youth Enhancing Skin and Jeju Orchid Skin can support you in your anti-ageing care routine while something like the Volcanic PHA Pore Refining Toner can help clarify skin that needs a little extra elbow grease.

The new Retinol Green Tea PDRN Skinbooster Toner is a toner formulated to address skin texture, glow, and elasticity all at once! The retinol in this product refines pores while also removing excess sebum and dead skin cells on the skin’s surface while the Green Tea PDRN improves skin elasticity and glow from within. Pairing this product with the Retinol Green Tea PDRN Skinbooster Ampoule only serves to amplify its effectiveness.

Toners are often overshadowed by flashier, “more efficacious” products, but if you know how to use them, toners are the cornerstone of a good skincare routine.

Use them wisely. ;)
