World Environment Day is around the corner and it’s got me thinking about all the things I love about this big green (and blue!) marble we live on!
If you’ve been around for a while, you know I love the feeling of the sun’s rays on my skin. I love exploring the great outdoors and taking in the sights and sounds of our wild planet. I especially love sinking my hands into the soil and digging my toes into the sand.
They’re little things, sure - but those are the things that make me feel alive.
I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a lot easier to forget about the vastness and beauty of nature when we’re back to our 9-5 schedules. The hustle and bustle is the no.1 reason I find myself choosing convenience over eco-consciousness, but as I strive to be a little better - I’m trying to develop new habits that make the eco-choice the default choice.
Here’s what I’m working on so far:
Cut the ‘crap’
In our hyper-consumerist society, novelty and single-use items are king. The first thing on my list is to limit the use of single-use items. Replacing your regular cotton pads with reusable cotton pads is a simple way to get started. Opting for refillable products can also make a big difference when it comes to reducing the amount of waste you generate. It could even be as simple as remembering to bring a bag with you the next time you’re out shopping so you can say no to another paper bag for your collection.
Finish What You Started
Don’t let your excitement get the best of you! Yes, new products are thrilling, but you should be trying your best to use every last drop before moving onto the next. What if you’re not gelling with a product? Try to find it a new home with a friend who might benefit from it!
Do More With Less!
Some brands offer products in different sizes. If you know you love a product, do yourself (and the earth) a favour by getting the biggest version you can! We don’t need to go into the science of why a mouse has a higher surface area to volume ratio than an elephant - but it’s the same principle that applies here. Bigger bottles and jars can sometimes even offer double the product while using less than double the plastic.
Be Intentional
It’s easy to kick back in the passenger seat, but you deserve to have a little more control! Choose brands and products that share your passion for the planet! Encourage your friends to do the same.
