Peptides in Skincare: What are they?

Finding that extra pep in your step

Can you hold onto youth forever? The short answer is no.

While we can’t put a stop to the inevitable, there are ways that we can slow its progress.

As always, I’ll remind you to keep sun care top of mind. The effects of UV damage like wrinkles, roughness, pigmentation, sunburns, or a combination of the above are irreversible, so nipping them in the bud is your best chance at keeping your skin feeling happy and youthful. But besides protection, how can we strengthen our skin from within?

Peep them peptides!

Meet peptides! Peptides are the new kids on the block regarding anti-aging care - let’s get to the bottom of how they work!

Peptides (always called polypeptides) are amino acids that make up the proteins that your skin needs - think collagen, elastin and keratin! They naturally occur in your skin, but their production tends to slow over time. While you may not have heard of them before recently, I’d bet you’ve heard of their work: polypeptides are responsible for producing collagen in your skin.

If you know about anti-aging skincare, you’ll know about the role of collagen for skin. It’s a protein responsible for your skin’s bounce and elasticity (in addition to all the great stuff it does for your bones and connective tissue!). So why not just slather up in a vat of collagen and call it a day? Oh, I wish it were so simple.

Peppy Power!

The truth is that it is very difficult (read: impossible) for your skin to absorb collagen due to its large molecular size - that’s why most people find ways to incorporate it into their diet - letting their body absorb it from the inside out. But our good friends, peptides, are giving us another option!

Natural peptides can be absorbed by the skin, increasing your body’s production of peptides and, in turn, collagen - keeping it going when it would otherwise start slowing down. Collagen can help keep your skin barrier strong - keeping your skin protected from external irritants while keeping water in your skin.

When to start using peptides

Effective anti-aging care needs to start early. Experts say that you can start as early as in your 20s. It makes sense when you think about it, it’s easy to keep a ball rolling when it already has momentum.

To give yourself the best shot, pair your peptides with their friends! Peptides play well with vitamin C, niacinamide, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acids, so using them together can improve your results!

If you’re ready, I’d like to point you to the innisfree Black Tea Treatment Essence as your first step in anti-aging care. Formulated to be used right after cleansing, this lightweight essence with a watery texture, nourishes your skin and prepares your skin for every product you use next. Its effectiveness is enhanced by its main ingredient: Black Tea Peptide Activator™ which combines 95% black tea extracts and 8 types of peptides to promote skin cell turnover, improve skin elasticity and boost radiance for that luminous glow we all want.

There’s nothing quite like the confidence that comes from having healthy skin. You’ll feel fresher, brighter, and more luminous.

Don’t be afraid to let them see you shine!
