The Right Skincare for Your Skin Type

Everyone’s got a type!

If you have skin, guess what: you have a skin type! Understanding your skin type is the first step in properly caring for your skin. Different skin types have different needs and anticipating those needs can be like a one-way-ticket to a gorgeous complexion.

Normal Skin

If your skin feels generally quite balanced; no big breakouts; no oily, slick feeling by the middle of the day; no crusty or chapped feeling when exposed to aircond; it’s very likely that you have been blessed with normal skin. But just because there are no immediate issues with your skin, it doesn’t mean that you can neglect it!

If you’ve got normal skin, you can benefit greatly from helping to maintain your skin’s natural moisture barrier. The moisturizing products in the Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic line are a simple, yet effective place to start with its generous use of Green Tea Water (made with Beauty Green Tea) and encapsulated hyaluronic acid to moisturize your skin from within.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is a result of your skin not producing enough oils to keep its surface moisturized. The result of this is chapping and a rough, even flaky, appearance. If this is you, worry not! There are ways that you can rejuvenate, rehydrate, and moisturize.

My numero uno piece of advice is to ensure you’re getting enough water during the day. Once you have that sorted, we can look at skincare. The Olive Vitamin E Real line is enriched with the skin rejuvenating benefits of olives and vitamin E to nourish and moisturize your skin simultaneously. Their antioxidant properties can also help to reduce inflammation caused by dryness.

Oily Skin

Oily skin comes from an overproduction of sebum - an occurrence that’ll cause your skin to look shiny and feel greasy to the touch. Those who struggle with oily skin may also find themselves grappling with enlarged pores, whiteheads, and blackheads

Sebum production is not a bad thing - the issue arises when it appears in excess. That is when it might be useful to bring out products such as those from the Volcanic Pore line which feature the highly-absorbent Jeju Volcanic Clusters that absorb excess sebum. It also wouldn’t hurt to tote the ever-reliable No-Sebum Mineral Powder with you for that midday touch-up and boost in confidence!

Combination Skin

Finding that your skin feels oily AND dry somehow? You’ve got combination skin, friend! Not to worry, lots of people do - you are not alone. You’ll know this is you if you find that parts of your face are oily (look in areas such as your T-zone and chin) and others (most often your cheeks) are dry or normal.

Caring for combination skin doesn’t have to be super challenging, although it is admittedly not as straightforward. Hydration is always important, no matter what, and then it might do you some good to turn to products like those in the Retinol Cica line which soothe and retexturize the skin, boosting your skin’s natural defensive power.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, you probably already know it and don’t need me to tell you. Sensitive skin can be reactive and easily triggered by external irritants like the weather, environment, or dyes and fragrances. Any skin type has the potential to also be sensitive: you can have sensitive combination skin, sensitive oily skin, or sensitive dry skin. It’s more of a “state of skin” than a skin type. So how do we address that?

The first thing you’ll want to do is identify your triggers. Does UV exposure set you off? Does your skin feel tight and itchy after you use a certain product? Finding products that play well with your skin will help tremendously. Products in the Bija Trouble and Bija Cica lines are formulated to be soothing and gentle on your skin and contain ingredients with regenerating effects and that help improve skin barrier health in general - which can help make your skin less reactive in the long run.

This is not a prescriptive list! All we wanna do here is to help you understand how your skin type could help you determine the next product you use. What might work for your BFF might not work for you and vice versa! One of my favorite things about building my skincare routine is that, at the end of the day, I know that it will work for me.

And don’t forget that skin types can change over the course of your life! Sometimes it’s hormones, sometimes it’s a lifestyle or diet change, sometimes it’s a response to moving to a new climate. What’s key is that you continue to pay attention and listen to what your skin is trying to tell you.

You got this!
