Skincare Minimalism
Do you really need all the bells and whistles?
“Korean skincare is sooo extra!”
“10-STEP skincare routine?!?”
“I hardly have enough energy at the end of the day to drag myself into the shower - you can forget an elaborate routine.”
Anything sounding familiar? I’ve certainly been there myself. Jumping into the world of skincare can be a wildly overwhelming experience and it can be challenging to know where to even start.
The 10-step skincare routine
Let’s go ahead and call this the “pinnacle” of skincare routines - the ideal, if you will. But it is most helpful to think of the 10 steps as an order of using the products and not an imperative. Knowing what the steps are and their place in the routine is helpful knowledge for how to build a routine that will work well for your skin type and lifestyle. Some people enjoy building a “complete” routine, while others would prefer something simpler and both options are totally fine!
The 3-step skincare routine
If you’re just starting out or looking to pare down, you may be happy to hear that (for most people) you’ll really just need three steps in the morning and at night. Start your day with a cleanser, moisturizer, and some form of suncare and end your day with a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. That’s all you really need to help keep your skin clean, well moisturized, and healthy.
What if I have skin troubles?
If you have troubled areas of your skin and if you deal with conditions such as acne, you may need to add a thing or two to help address active breakouts. (Hello, spot cream!) But it may be helpful to hear that troubled skin often benefits from a less is more approach - you just need to invest some time into figuring out which products play nice with your skin.
How do I build a simple skincare routine?
When building yourself a skincare routine, you’ll want to consider two main things: your skin type and what will work with your current lifestyle. If you’re hoping to be using the bare minimum number of products, you will be happier knowing that they work really well for your skin type. You can learn more about choosing skincare products for your skin type here.
It can also help to factor in lifestyle factors. For example, if you spend a lot of time in air conditioned environments, it may make sense to use more hydrating products or a heavier moisturizer. If you wear makeup regularly, it might be helpful to use a cleansing oil or cleansing water before your normal cleanser to ensure you get a thorough cleanse.
Where do I start?
If you don’t already know what you like or you’re helping to introduce someone to skincare, a good place to start is with a simple and reliable skincare line such as the Green Tea Hyaluronic line. This line encompasses a pretty wide range of different products - you’re free to make it as simple or as thorough as you’d like - that are packed with key ingredients to keep your skin clean and looking healthier.
Everyone’s skincare journey is different. For some, a full 10 step routine can be a relaxing and meditative way to begin and end a day. For others, something like the 3-step routine is more than enough.
It’s your face! You get to choose!
Just remember that the best skincare routine is one you can stick to.
